  • Classrooms under water in Marigat after Lake Baringo breached its banks

By WYCLIFFE KIPSANG

Several schools on Monday failed to open for Third Term after classrooms were submerged in water following flash floods in Marigat District.

The floods have swept through several villages after Lake Baringo breached it banks as a result of heavy rains pounding Baringo County.

More than 2,000 people in more than 20 villages in Ng’ambo and Salabani locations have been rendered homeless even as the floods and wildlife killed their livestock.

A spot check by the Nation showed that classrooms at Kokwo, Ng’ambo, Sintaan, Loropil, Salabani, Leswo and Ilng’arua primary schools were full of water. Secondary schools on the verge of being submerged include Ng’ambo, Salabani and Kiserian. Affected families told the Nation that they were ready to move to safe grounds if government supports them.

“We have identified safe areas where our people can move to on condition that the government supports them to start their lives afresh. We are also ready to move institutions which have been affected,” Ilchamus County Representative Wesley Lekakimon said.

He said residents had resolved to move Ng’ambo Primary School to Lomolok as Salabani Primary School goes to Kerio.

“The situation is very bad. We fear that should the heavy downpour persist in the next one week, people living on Kokwo Island will have to be relocated,” Loropil village elder Losokul Lepario said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku last week pledged to address the plight of affected families.
