Catholic Relief Services is helping families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed by flooding following weeks of heavy rain in Niger.

“CRS is responding in collaboration with the local Caritas to provide assistance to 500 families,” said Bill Rastetter, CRS Country Representative. “We have additional private funds ready to respond to further damage as the rainy season goes on.”

The CRS aid will go to the city of Maradi in the south-central part of the West African country where more than 1,000 people have been left homeless. It consists of 500 kits including sleeping mats, blankets, soap, buckets and mosquito nets, all items that are often lost in flooding. CRS is also rehabilitating three school latrines to improve hygienic conditions for families who have taken refuge in the school.

“CRS is working with the government of Niger which is providing food and other humanitarian groups that are responding to other needs,” Rastetter said.
