The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, is scheduled to visit Sudan from 20 to 23 May.

During her mission, Ms. Amos will meet with officials from the Government of Sudan and representatives from humanitarian organizations. She will discuss with them ways to improve humanitarian access to people affected by conflict and displacement, particularly in South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur.

She is also expected to travel to Darfur to see for herself the ongoing humanitarian operation ten years after the current emergency began. The humanitarian community continues to work with the Government to address the deteriorating living conditions in camps and to find durable solutions for people who have been displaced for many years. Ms. Amos will look into how the humanitarian community can strengthen its capacity to meet the urgent needs of hundreds of thousands of people who have fled their homes due to recent fighting.

A press conference is scheduled for 2.15 p.m. (GMT +3) on Thursday 23 May at the UNDP Merawi Conference Room in Khartoum.
