KEY DRIVERS OF THE CRISIS

  • Political and security situation is highly volatile: sporadic armed conicts in Bangui, continued looting, reports of sexual violence and armed groups recruiting children (Fears of religious and ethnic based conict.)
  • Food security crisis looms as a result of the on-going insecurity compounded by widespread looting, limited access to farms, subsequent large internal displacement and restricted access to provide humanitarian assistance Impoverished country: Chronic poverty, hunger, persistent human rights violations in the country, people are excluded, marginalized and denied meaningful participation in the political processes and breakdown of any social cohesion.
  • Humanitarian operating environment: The humanitarian response capacity of several UN and INGOs in Bangui has been severely compromised as a result of the looting of their oces and warehouses, insecurity threat and the hijacking of vehicles.
  • IDPs and new refugees’ arrival: Large internal displacement of population and new wave of refugee arrival from Darfur further compound the
