RONGA TAS (19 Apr .) - An armed group attacked on Thursday evening the police station of the Ronga Tas camp in Central Darfur. Police officers opened fire on the assailants killing one of them.

The other insurgents, riding camels and horses, fled the area after exchanging fire with the police, eyewitnesses recounted.

Camp’s residents were “panicked” and complained to Radio Dabanga about the high levels of insecurity at the site, especially after hearing about violent incidents in other camps.

They said lootings and beatings carried out by armed groups happen frequently in Ronga Tas, adding that women are particularly vulnerable to being raped when they leave the site to collect firewood.

The displaced also complained about the scarcity of drinking water the camp is facing “for a long time” now.

Ronga Tas’ residents are asking UNAMID and the international community for protection. They are also asking authorities to speed up the provision of security and solve their “chronic water problem”.
