The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Scheme (GGP), is providing funds amounting to some 3,138,000 baht for the Project “Preparing Equipment and Improving Skills in order to deal with Flooding” in Bangkrabue Sub-District, Singburi Province. On February 15, 2013, H.E. Mr. Shigekazu Sato, Ambassador of Japan, and Mr. Boonchob Smukwong, President of the Community Organization Council in Bangkrabue Sub-District, jointly signed the funding contract for the project at the Embassy of Japan.

This project aims to cope with flooding and reduce flood damage by improving skills and preparing equipment for an area affected by flooding for a long period of time.

Bangkrabue Sub-District, Muang District, Singburi Province, which is the target area of the project, covers 10,981 Rai (17.56 square kilometres) and is close to the Chaopraya River.

This area has a population of about 6,365 people in 1,939 households, 80% of whom earn a living by rice farming. However, being next to the Chaopraya River, Bangkrabue Sub-District is a flood-prone area which has been repeatedly damaged by flooding over the years. In particular, the flooding in 2011 caused severe damages to agricultural produce putting 3,680 people in 1,514 households in difficulties.

Given the above situation, the project aims to bring about ways to handle and prepare equipment to deal with flooding, mitigate flood damage and lead to community development.

The main activities of the project

  1. Training on “floating gardens” to use as cultivated land in periods of flooding.
  2. Holding youth camps for water skills training.
  3. Construction of knock-down bridges for transportation and provision of a motor-powered flatboat for emergency rescue.

Bearing in mind, the flood of 2011, which had a big impact on Thailand over the past year, the Government of Japan considers that this project will help to improve techniques in water skills, including flood management, and helping flood victims, and finally lead to strengthening community spirit.

The Government of Japan intends to continue supporting projects which contribute to human security promotion through its Grant Assistance for Human Security Projects scheme (GGP).
