Four months ago, Lemusa Village, Sulawesi, Indonesia was buried under six metres of mud. In one night, most people lost their homes and their farms – their only source of income. Rita Rondunuwu can no longer farm, but she is one of the lucky ones. With support from the Indonesian Government and the UN agency IFAD, Rita was able to access funds for her weaving business, as we find out from this report by IFAD’s Joanne Levitan.

CTBTO on alert for nuclear testing

Back in 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which bans nuclear explosions everywhere on the earth's surface – in the atmosphere, in outer space, underwater and underground. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) was established to verify that no nuclear tests take place. CTBTO Spokesperson Annika Thunborg talks about monitoring amid renewed threats of a nuclear test in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Indigenous youth define their place in the world

"Modern stereotypes of indigenous identity do not define us as indigenous peoples, but oppress us from reaching our full potential as leaders in our communities," wrote Steven Brown, an aborigine from Australia. He spoke at the first international expert group meeting on indigenous youth held at the United Nations from the 29th to the 31st of January. Gerry Adams spoke with Mr. Brown about his thoughts on the meeting’s theme, "Identity, hopes and challenges," and Australian society’s treatment of its indigenous population.
