During his recent visit to Myanmar, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Vijay Nambiar, met the Vice-President Dr. Sai Mauk Kham; Union Ministers in the President's Office U Soe Thane and U Aung Min; Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin; Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Khin Yi; and Deputy Minister for Information and Spokesperson of the President's Office U Ye Htut.
As part of his continuing engagements as mandated by the General Assembly resolution on Myanmar, the Special Adviser discussed the situation in Kachin, in Rakhine and progress on matters related to the Census, as well as other humanitarian, developmental and political reconciliation issues, including the overall progress of reforms and the role the UN could play.
On the situation in Kachin, Mr. Nambiar underlined the Secretary-General's concern at the continuing attacks and called on all sides to work towards building an atmosphere of lowered tension and for the resumption of dialogue. While this matter was for the parties to negotiate between themselves he stressed the interest of the UN to see that the continued stalemate and escalated tensions did not undermine the overall direction of reform and transformation in the country or adversely affect the positive international atmosphere that had been generated so far. He appealed to all parties for greater humanitarian access in the region for UN agencies and other humanitarian partners so that they could further scale up relief work to provide the much needed help to the communities impacted by the recent escalation in the conflict.
