AmeriCares large scale hurricane response—totaling $1 million in overall aid to date, continued throughout the Thanksgiving holiday. A Thanksgiving turkey dinner for 500—with all of the trimmings—was served at a Nassau Community College shelter operated by the American Red Cross.
AmeriCares also sent out shipments of aid through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with four shipments totaling over $200,000 in aid arriving in affected areas of New York and New Jersey. Our Hurricane Sandy relief teams have been working nonstop on the ground and with clinics, shelters, and partners to ease the suffering of victims in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, delivering:
84 shipments of medicines and other supplies to hard-hit communities, including first aid, insulin, 600+ doses of vaccine, medical supplies, enough bottled water for 55,000 people, blankets, diapers for 8,000 babies, sleeping bags, flashlights, first-aid kits, and 470,000 individual personal hygiene and relief supplies to support the work of clinics and shelters serving the ill, injured, powerless and displaced —aid that will benefit more than 139,000 people.
$304,000+ in grants to organizations to benefit 98,000 people in need. This includes grants to the World Cares Center for programs to provide emergency warmth and disaster cleanup for survivors in Staten Island and Far Rockaway, a grant and medical aid to help Breezy Point emergency services, a grant to help elderly and disabled survivors stranded in high-rise buildings in Coney Island, and flash grants to help community organizations supply needed relief items and clean-up crews to Staten Island.
Deployment of a mobile medical clinic: On November 12-13, our clinic deployed to Rockaway, Queens, to help the Joseph P. Addabbo Health Center deliver care to families in need. From November 1-6, the clinic was stationed in three locations in Staten Island, where dozens of patients received primary care, tetanus and flu vaccines.

“Sandy is the worst storm the East Coast has experienced in a generation,” said Garrett Ingoglia, AmeriCares vice president of emergency response. “In some of the most devastated areas the power is remains out, and families are still living in shelters. We will continue to work on a large-scale, long-term response to help families who are displaced, without power or lack access to health care as a result of the storm.”
In devastated Atlantic City, our teams delivered essential personal hygiene items and 570 course treatments of assorted medicines and vaccines for survivors still displaced by the storm. We’ve delivered 50 special needs cots, a dozen wheelchairs, a refrigerator to store insulin for diabetic patients, and more than 1,400 pounds of first aid supplies and over-the-counter medicines to the Nassau Community College shelter in long Island – the same shelter serving the AmeriCares-sponsored Thanksgiving dinner.
