DILG integrates disaster preparedness in good governance

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Aug. 23 (PIA) - - The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has integrated disaster preparedness to the Seal of Good Housekeeping to keep local government units always prepared during times of disaster.
Provincial DILG Director Francisco Gamatero said they are now requiring all LGUs to prepare local disaster plans from the provincial, municipal down to the barangay level which is also one basis for the release of calamity funds.
He said this is one of the policies of the late Sec. Jesse Robredo - he wanted LGUs to comply with this before earning the seal of good housekeeping. “We have directed local chief executives to come out with their respective disaster plans this year,” Gamatero said.
It has been found out that the absence of disaster preparedness plans is one reason that contributed to the heavy damages on lives and properties during disasters, he said.
During the mass offered for Sec. Robredo at Capitol here yesterday, Gamatero announced that disaster risk reduction and management councils is now a pillar in local governance that has to play a major role in keeping the populace safe and away from disaster.
He said their municipal local government operations officers were instructed to supervise and monitor the formulation of disaster plans for early submission and their prompt execution when calamities occur. (PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
