Current situation
Civilians are bearing the brunt of armed violence in North Kivu, eastern DR Congo, as fighting has displaced more than 220,000 people in the province since April. An additional 57,677 Congolese have crossed into neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda. Recent fighting has forced aid organizations to relocate staff from Walikale town, where they were treating cholera, malaria and measles, and limited access by humanitarian organizations. The situation remains fluid with civilians on the move in large numbers, notably in Rutshuru and Walikale territories. Despite these challenges, aid agencies have been conducting assessments and providing health services, food, shelter and other basic necessities.
More than 7,000 protection incidents, including recruitment of minors and sexual violence, were reported between April and mid-July. The North Kivu crisis has led to calls for more funding in DRC, Rwanda and Uganda. The DRC 2012 Action Plan stands at USD 791 million, a 10 per cent increase from the original requirements.
In total, an estimated 2.2 million people are displaced in the DRC, up by 460,000 since the beginning of the year.
