24 July 2012: The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has given US$6,896,415 to humanitarian partners in Mali to aid conflict-affected people.

Some 146,000 Malians have been internally displaced, and over 191,000 have sought refuge in neighbouring countries following the onset of fighting in January between Government forces and the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad. This complex emergency strikes areas that are highly food-insecure following the 2011 drought. In addition, most basic services no longer function in the three northern regions and in parts of the country not under Government control.
The crisis has adversely affected the education system, and most secondary-school students have moved to southern regions of Mali to resume schooling.

In response, CERF has provided rapid response grants to eight UN agencies and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). As an estimated 90 per cent of internally displaced persons (IDPs) have sought shelter with host families, CERF funds will target IDPs and host communities.
To ensure delivery of emergency medical care to 200,000 people, CERF gave $965,907 for a joint project of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UN Women, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Funded activities aim to provide essential health services to people in northern regions, including IDPs, support emergency obstetric and neonatal care delivery, re-establish disease surveillance and immunization programmes to control preventable diseases, and ensure medical management of sexual violence cases in health facilities.

To support the protection of some 75,000 women and children affected by the emergency, CERF provided $479,671 to support a joint UNICEF, UNFPA and UN Women project. CERF funds will be used to coordinate gender-based violence (GBV) prevention activities, document GBV cases, support mine action awareness activities, deliver 2,500 dignity kits, and reunify separated and unaccompanied children with their families. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and IOM received $699,952 to fund a joint project to ensure the protection of IDPs, register displaced people and provide core relief items.

To supply emergency food, nutrition and livelihood support, CERF gave $3,081,366 to the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UNICEF. UNICEF also received a $344,749 grant to fund emergency education activities for 20,000 children and adolescents. The Fund gave WFP a $324,230 grant to ensure common telecommunication and data services for humanitarian partners in Mali.

CERF also funded UNICEF ($864,100) and WHO ($136,440) projects to help deliver clean water and appropriate sanitation to IDPs and conflict-affected communities.
