WFP Sahel response

The WFP response to the Sahel crisis began with preparedness and activities in October 2011. Immediate life-saving assistance through food security and nutrition interventions and resilience-building activities are key in linking relief and recovery efforts.
In April, WFP was advocated to launching, adjusting or massively scaling up nutrition programmes that prioritize the delivery of the right foods at the right time to children under 5 and pregnant women and nursing mothers, who face the highest risk of health risks and mortality linked to malnutrition. Large-scale blanket supplementary feeding programmes prevent acute malnutrition among children 6-23 months and their mothers in risk areas, irrespective of their nutrition status. Specialised nutrition products to supplement the normal diet are provided during the lean season (April/May to October).
