I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • The number of Malian refugees in neighboring countries continues to increase. As of 30 April, close to 159,000 Malian refugees had been registered in Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Niger. 30,000 more are in Algeria according to the Algerian government.

  • As of 22 April, WFP estimated that as many as 130,000 people could be internally displaced in Mali.

  • Banditry and insecurity in northern Mali remain of great concern and humanitarian access to populations in that area remains limited.

  • Humanitarian needs persist for water, food, shelter, health and protection. Vulnerable women and children in refugee camps especially require a protective environment.

  • Appeal processes for Burkina Faso and Mauritania are near completion and for Mali under way.
