Close to 40 percent of the Sudanese population are children under 15 years of age. Underinvestment in the education of children and youth risks jeopardizing the future of millions of Sudanese children, as they grow up unskilled, poorly equipped for adult life, unhealthy and with significantly reduced chances of meaningful future employment. As funding contributions to Sudan diminish, the need for durable community-owned education systems capable of reaching out to children and youth remains a humanitarian priority.

Objectives for 2012 include increasing access to education for the most vulnerable populations, improving the quality of education, and increasing access to alternatives to formal education, such as livelihoods skills-based learning opportunities. (Source: HWP 2012)
