(Hong Kong E25 June 2010) To respond to the severe flooding in the extensive southern region in China, Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) pledges relief materials and donation valued at HK$1.1 million in support of the affected population to overcome the harsh moment. Meanwhile, our relief officer is in Hunan Province, one of the worst-hit areas, to conduct on site need assessment.

Disaster Situation

The heavy downpours have been casing extensive flooding in southern region in China. According to statistics from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the Chinese Government dated 23 June, the floods have affected approximately 30 million people in 10 provinces / autonomous regions including Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan and Guizhou. Around 210 people died, 120 people missing, and 2.4 million people are displaced and relocated in emergency during the flood. 1.6 million hectares of farmland have been affected, among which 280,000 hectares has been totally destroyed; over 210,000 rooms of village houses collapsed while over RMB43.3 billion of direct economic loss was resulted. Situation is expected to deteriorate as more heavy rain is forecasted.

HKRC donates family kits and relief food

HKRC has donated 3,200 family kits to assist the relocated population in Hunan, Jiangxi and Guizhou. The family kits include daily necessaries such as toweling coverlet, mosquito net, towel, T-shirt, shorts, slippers, plastic bucket, utensil, electric torch and soap to relocated victims. In addition, HKRC also donated HK$200,000 to Jiangxi Provincial Red Cross to procure rice to respond to the emergency need of the victims. Up till now, the materials and donation pledged by HKRC is amounted to HK$1.1 million for the flood-affected people in China.

Action by Red Cross Society of China (RCSC)

RCSC has sent the relief materials, including tents, quilts, cotton-padded clothes, family kits, toweling coverlets, mosquito nets and disinfectant, valued at about RMB4.4 million, to the provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, Guangdong and Hubei. Besides, another RMB6 million is pledged to procure relief materials which will be distributed through various local Red Cross societies.

Future Plan

HKRC is closely monitoring the flood situation with RCSC and local Red Cross in order to plan for the next phase relief actions.
