  • The Government of Ethiopia has issued the revised Humanitarian Requirement Document (HRD) on 8 August 2017. USD 1.25 billion are currently needed to cover humanitarian needs in the country, of which USD 487.7 million outstanding requirements.

  • The number of people in need of emergency food assistance increased up to 8.5 million (compared to the initial number of 5.6 million foreseen in January 2017). Additional 4 million people targeted by the Government's food pipelines will also require sustained assistance for a total of USD 300 million.

  • 3.9 million children and pregnant and lactating women are expected to be acutely malnourished, including 376 000 children expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition. 10.5 million people will require access to safe drinking water. 2.25 million households will require support to keep their livestock alive.

  • Southern and eastern regions of Ethiopia continue to be severely affected by the drought, while the number of refugees fleeing from South Sudan is putting pressure on the already saturated service provision on north west regions. DG ECHO is scaling up its response with € 20 million to address the most urgent needs. In total, DG ECHO provided € 76.5 million in 2017 to address humanitarian needs in Ethiopia.
