Alfano: “Political, social and environmental problems in the Horn of Africa cause large migration flows. In Ethiopia, living conditions are made extremely difficult by the El Niño climate phenomenon, obliging the Country to tackle one of the most serious climate shocks in its history. According to the WHO, it is the most serious humanitarian crisis of the last 30 years.”

“In order to confront this emergency, the Italian Cooperation service has approved two humanitarian initiatives worth a total of 4 million euros. The two initiatives are targeted interventions worth 2 million euros each and are respectively aimed at improving the living conditions of the population at risk of migrating illegally – through job creation and qualitatively and quantitatively improving basic services – and at tackling the drought emergency generated by El Niño by assuring food security, access to water and improving the management of natural resources.”

“Once again, development cooperation proves to be a strategic investment tool and therefore pivotal in our foreign policy,” concluded the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
