Overview of Flood, July 2017
Rise of water levels in the various rivers in the northern and northeast part of the country due to heavy rainfalls as well as water flow from the upstream Meghalaya hills in India have led to the inundation of low-lying areas. After the devastating flood on middle of April, second time flood started on 27 June affecting two northeast districts Sylhet and Moulvibazar. Flood started from July 02 affecting eight districts Rangpur, Kurigram, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Bogra, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Nilphamari. Rising water overflow and breeched embankment in many places. It destroyed people’s normal live.
According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) as on July 19, 2017, of the 90 stations under monitoring, water levels at 25 stations have been increasing while water levels at 59 stations were decreasing. Also, irrespective of whether rising or falling, at 6 points, rivers have been running above the danger level (details in table- 1). Flood situation in several northern districts such as Jamalpur, Bogra, Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari are getting better.
