  • Flooding is spreading to the low-lying areas of central Bangladesh as the water level in the Ganges-Padma basin (west) continues to rise. According to the Water Development Board’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), floods have deteriorated in the central region but remain unchanged in the north. 16 major measuring stations in north, northeast and central region of Bangladesh reported that the Ganges-Padma and Kushiyara rivers are still rising and this is likely to continue in the next 24 hours, while the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Surma rivers are now in falling trend.

  • According to the Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief (MoDMR) more than 1.5 million people are affected in 10 districts. More than 42 000 hectares of croplands are fully or partially damaged in seven districts and at least 1 571 primary and secondary schools are damaged, seriously hampering education of thousands of students. Thousands of families are displaced and taking shelters on embankment, flood shelters or in neighbouring houses. As of 17 July, 17 people have died in the floods.

  • According to the GoB, almost BDT 11 million cash (EUR 120 000), 4 200 MTs food/rice and 16 000 packets of dry foods were allocated in 11 districts. DG ECHO Partners and local NGOs have initiated emergency response in some of the most affected districts.

  • For the coming days the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) predicts that the monsoon will be less active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
