HIGHLIGHTS

  • After a decrease in the number of new arrivals over the last month, 4,960 South Sudanese refugees arrived in Uganda between the 29th of June and 4th of July compared to 3,817 the week before. The average daily rate of new arrivals for the week was 709. The number of South Sudanese refugees in Uganda now stands at 975,095.

  • World Refugee Day was celebrated across the settlements, with events including performances of songs, drama and poems, marches, exhibitions, a football match and speeches, with speakers from the refugee and host communities, including local government calling for unity, improved living conditions, security and social amenities, and peaceful co-existence.

  • The Refugee Emergency Telecommunications Sector (RETS) has deployed a satellite terminal at Impevi Base Camp, linked to the Reception Centre, providing internet connectivity for humanitarian agencies operating across the area. Additional radio communications equipment has also been installed at Impevi Base Camp, expanding the range of VHF radio communications to settlements at the far end, ensuring humanitarians have access to an independent and reliable means of security telecommunications.

  • In Arua, farming groups composed of refugees and Ugandan host community members have been able to secure and site more than 80% of the minimum 50 acres of arable land required for farming. All of the groups have identified land for farming which will be able to accommodate study plots for technology transfer and peer-to-peer learning. The approach of mixed groups (refugees and nationals) has proved effective in strengthening peaceful coexistence, as well as providing refugees access to arable land for farming.
