Countrywide Conflict Displacement

This year, more than 136,300 people have fled their homes due to conflict in Afghanistan. This is 25 per cent less compared to the same period in the previous year, in which 181,030 people were displaced. Displacements this year have reached the majority of the country, with displacements being registered in 29 out of 34 provinces. Some 17 per cent of all displaced people have sought refuge in areas deemed hard to reach for humanitarian partners.

Central: Nearly 2,200 people reportedly arrived in Kabul displaced from Baghlan and Nangarhar provinces. Over 5,000 people reportedly arrived in Wardak’s capital Maydanshahr from neighbouring Nangarhar province. Since January, 7,730 people have been displaced in the Central Region, less than 6 per cent of the total displacement country-wide.

Northern/North Eastern: Over 2,300 people have reportedly been displaced from different districts in Kunduz to several localities in neighbouring Takhar Province. Authorities in Kunduz reported the arrival of nearly 6,125 people from Imam Sahib and 2,674 people displaced within Kunduz city. Since January, over 60,100 people have been displaced in the north and north-eastern regions, 44 per cent of the total displacements country-wide this year.

Eastern: Continued fighting between NSAGs and military operations in the south of Nangarhar reportedly displaced 10,850 people to safer areas within the province. Around 30 schools have been forced to close, according to humanitarian sources, depriving nearly 15,000 pupils including over 5,400 girls from education. In 2017, nearly 19,700 people have been displaced in the region, 14 per cent of all displaced people in the country this year.

Southern: Military operations have reportedly displaced approximately 400 people in three districts of Hilmand, these figures could however not yet be confirmed. Since January, more than 36,000 people have been displaced in southern and southeastern regions, 26 per cent of the total displaced people in Afghanistan this year.

Western: No displacements have been reported from the Western Region during the reporting period. This year, more than 12,500 people have been displaced in the western region. They account for 9 per cent of the total of people displaced in Afghanistan since January.

Refugees and Returnees

A total of 671 undocumented Afghans spontaneously returned or were deported from Pakistan from 11 to 17 June, according to IOM. Some 4,593 undocumented Afghans arrived from Iran. The total number of undocumented Afghans who returned from Pakistan in 2017, is 68,723.

From 11 to 18 June, 599 refugees returned from Pakistan and 7 from Iran, according to UNHCR. The week before Ramadan, over 6,000 people crossed the border from Pakistan. Ongoing Response Activities* (please see page 2)

Central: In Kabul City, 595 vulnerable displaced people received food from IR. In Khost, 7,500 refugees from Pakistan received regular food assistance from WFP. In Logar, 301 undocumented returnees received cash assistance from IRC and food from WFP and 322 people received cash and emergency household items from IRC and UNHCR. In Gardez City, Paktya, 3,682 people received cash assistance from CARE.

North/North Eastern: In Badakhshan, 1,274 people received cash assistance via ACTED. In Baghlan, 2,079 displaced people received cash, food and WASH packages from ACTED, WFP and DACAAR. In Kunduz City, 159 displaced families received cash assistance from NRC, emergency household items from SCI, hygiene kits from DACAAR and food from WFP and Oxfam distributed poultry and fertilizer to 79 more families. In Iman Sahib district, ACTED distributed tents and blankets to over 50 families.

Eastern: In Laghman, 1,085 displaced people received cash to buy food from DRC-DDG. In Kunar, DACAAR continued water trucking and provided 448 displaced people with over 5,500 litres of water per day and built 22 latrines. IMC supported by UNICEF provided WASH services to 347 returnees at the border with Pakistan and installed hand washing facilities. In four districts of Nangarhar, over 400 undocumented returnee families (2,800 people) received an unconditional cash grant via Oxfam and its local partner AHEAD.

Southern: In Kandahar and Zabul, more than 1,900 displaced people received emergency assistance from DACAAR, NRC, SCI, UNICEF, UNHCR and WFP. WHO informed of one new case of Polio in Nawzad district, the second case in Hilmand and the fourth in Afghanistan this year.

Western: In Badghis, more than 700 displaced people received cash assistance from NRC, emergency household items and hygiene kits from UNICEF. In addition, IRC provided hygiene promotion. A locust infestation has affected 20 to 70 per cent of cultivated land in four districts of Badghis and Ghor, according to a mobile Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping (VAM) conducted by WFP.

Central: One staff member of a health NGO was reportedly killed in Alikhel (Jaji) district of Paktya.
