Latest humanitarian snapshot highlights flooding in Indonesia, Myanmar and Philippines

PHILIPPINES

On 12 April, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck in Lanao del Sur province (Mindanao) affecting about 2,800 people in the town of Wao. No casualties have been reported. To date, 652 houses were damaged.

Regional disaster management authorities have augmented local relief efforts and continue to closely coordinate with municipal authorities.

2,800 people affected

As of 17 April, flash floods triggered by Tropical Depression 02W (locally named Tropical Storm Crising) caused nine deaths in the municipalities of Carmen and Danao, Cebu province. The tropical depression passed over Central Visayas on 15 and 16 April and damaged over 170 houses in Carmen. An estimated 1,200 people temporarily evacuated but have since returned home. Local and regional authorities are providing relief to the affected communities.

As of 15 April, over 3,200 people remain displaced as a result of an armed encounter between Government troops and suspected Abu Sayyaf Group members on 11 April in the town of Inabanga, Bohol province. At least, 2,200 people remain in nine evacuation centres. No civilian casualties have been reported. The regional social welfare office is augmenting the municipal government’s management of the evacuation centres and relief distributions.

INDONESIA

Days of torrential rains caused a landslide in Southeast Aceh District (Aceh Province) on 11 April. The landslide caused two deaths and damaged 298 houses. An estimated 2,500 people were temporarily evacuated. On 12 and 13 April, flooding was also reported in West Aceh District affecting around 2,000 people. Local governments have provided relief assistance.

MYANMAR

On 16 April, Tropical Storm Maarutha made landfall on the coast of Rakhine State bringing heavy rains and high winds in western Myanmar. According to Government reports, no casualties or major damage were reported in Rakhine State to date.

Minor roofing damage and fallen trees were reported throughout the affected areas and some roads were damaged in the Magway Region.
