  • Tropical Cyclone COOK passed through Vanuatu on 8 April and reached New Caledonia on 10 April, causing strong winds, heavy rains and floods. After having passed New Caledonia, it continued moving south towards New Zealand, weakening.

  • Vanuatu: TC COOK caused floods and damage to crops and infrastructures, especially on the island of Efate.

  • New Caledonia: media reported one death, four people injured, as well as floods and damage along the east cost of Grand Terre, especially in the communities around Thio, Canala, Houailou and Kouaoua. A number of houses were also damaged in Lifou (Loyalty Islands).

  • Over the next 24 h, the Cyclone is expected to move south, crossing the North Island (New Zealand). It could cause heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge in several areas of the island, with the risk of floods. The MetService of New Zealand has issued warnings for heavy rain and strong winds for several areas of the North Island.

  • Last week, heavy rains and floods affected the northern areas of New Zealand. According to media, 2 000 people were forced to evacuate in Edgecumbe city (North Island), after the Rangitaiki river burst through a levee.
