The Military Medical Clinical Centre of the Central Region in Vinnytsia is one of six hospitals throughout Ukraine to receive medical equipment with support from the Government of Japan.

The Government of Japan donated a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner and endoscopy equipment —worth a total value of $660,000 — to the hospital on 20 March 2017.

The new equipment will significantly improve medical examinations. The CT scanner will replace a broken scanner and will allow the hospital to perform up to 140 medical examinations every month.

The endoscopy equipment will help the hospital serve approximately 15 percent more patients and provide timely diagnostics for early-stage cancer.

Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Oleh Shevchuk, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Olexiy Poroshenko, Ambassador of Japan H. E. Shigeki Sumi and UNOPS Europe and Central Asia Regional Office Head of Programme Armen Chobanyan attended the handover ceremony.

"The Government of Japan together with the UNOPS provided significant support to the City of Vinnytsia and this hospital. Now the population has access to the high quality diagnostics services which will improve their health," said Olexiy Poroshenko.

At the beginning of 2016, the Embassy of Japan, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and UNOPS, identified the need for more efficient diagnostic procedures in hospitals across Ukraine.

To aid in this, the Government of Japan has donated $2.5 million worth of medical equipment to hospitals across the country.

"We started providing support to the health sector in Ukraine two years ago and we identified that the military hospitals need assistance as well. The prevention of diseases is equally important as the treatment, so the CT scanner and the endoscopy set donated by the people of Japan will help with it," explained Ambassador of Japan H. E. Shigeki Sumi.
