Baghdad, 20 March 2017 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ján Kubiš, extends his greetings and best wishes to the Iraqi people in general and to those who are observing Nowruz in particular on this special occasion.

“Nowruz is a time of renewal, a new beginning and for getting together with family and friends in a joyous and peaceful atmosphere. For many people, unfortunately, this is not the case today as the battle to dislodge the terrorist Daesh from its strongholds continues to force tens of thousands to flee their homes. I salute the people’s patience and steadfastness in the face of the suffering and hardship. Our hope that their nightmare that was caused by Daesh will end soon with the liberation of Mosul and other areas from the terrorists’ reign so that they will be able to return home,” Mr. Kubiš said.

He added: “On this occasion, I wish to also salute the bravery of the Iraqi security forces and Peshmerga who are fighting the terrorist Daesh or standing on guard across this country and whose sacrifices have made it possible to celebrate Nowruz in many areas in peace and security.”
