Mogadishu, 24 February 2017 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) recently equipped a hospital in Marka town that serves one of the biggest populations in the area that is under the control of the Ugandan contingent.

The hospital received 30 beds, 60 waterproof mattresses, 60 bedsheets, 30 hospital bedside tables, 30 drip-stands, four drug dispensing tables and six office chairs.

The equipping of the hospital was made under the Quick Impact Projects through the Civil Affairs section of AMISOM.

The equipment estimated at US$17,000 was funded by the African Union Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) department based in Addis Ababa.

Senior Civil Affairs officer, Opiyo Ododa, said the equipping of the hospital was reached after consultations with the local community around Marka town.

“Our objective was to reach the community in an area that AMISOM has recovered from Al-Shabaab”, Dr. Opiyo noted.

He observed that the funding by the African Union’s PCRD was unique and the first time that the department was playing any role in Somalia’s reconstruction.

Dr. Opiyo thanked AMISOM’s Civil and Military Co-ordination (CIMIC) for collaborating on the hospital project.
The Civil Affairs officer said besides equipping the hospital, plans were underway to construct schools in the town through the Quick Impact Projects aimed at uplifting the lives of local residents.

Also scheduled to be implemented under the project is road construction and equipping of existing schools.

The overall objective of the Civil Affairs Unit is to work at the social, administrative and political levels to facilitate the implementation of AMISOM mandate and support the Federal Government of Somalia in strengthening conditions and structures conducive to sustainable peace.
