OCHA Situation Report No. 1
Solomon Islands - Cyclone Gina
occurred: 5 June 2003

This situation report is based on information provided by the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), through the OCHA Regional Disaster Response Adviser for the Pacific. Although this disaster occurred more than three weeks ago, the situation and needs were just made available by the NDMO.

Event and Impact

1. On 5 June 2003, Tropical Cyclone Gina passed 56 km west of the island of Tikopia, the Solomon Islands, affecting the island with winds up to 93-111 km/h. The cyclone caused damage to the districts of Faea and Ravenga, a part of the areas declared as a disaster area due to the Tropical Cyclone Zoe, which occurred in January 2003.

2. The affected area is still under recovery from the damage caused by the Cyclone Zoe. A total of 112 newly re-built houses and 128 kitchens were badly damaged; a total of 37 houses slightly damaged. In addition, 143 bags of rice were damaged and have to be eaten or thrown away before they spoil. Banana and cassava plants, still at the very young stage, were damaged. Sea spray also caused newly plants to wither and die. A landslide was also reported at Ravenga. The destruction has put the recovery process both in the shelter and community production sector back further.

National Response

3. The National Disaster Council and NDMO have made a plan for delivery of emergency relief supplies to ask donor for support to the affected area. The objective of the plan is to distribute shelter materials urgently to 30 families on Tikopia whose houses were blown down by the Cyclone Gina. Required materials and their costs are as follows:
