APCEDI Alert 03C1 #7, Cyclone Ami (10P)
Cyclone Ami has now passed into the Southern Ocean and no longer poses a threat to Fiji or Tonga. =A0Tonga escaped relatively unscathed from the storm. =A0Damage information is coming out from many areas but is overall consistent with that forecast in the previous APCEDI Reports. =A0However, some media reports have been wildly speculative and quite inaccurate in terms of basic understanding of cyclones and related damage. =A0Media should attempt to verify stories and understand basic cyclone terminology before issuing news reports.

With NZAID and AusAID funding assessment flights in close co-ordination with the Fiji Government, this will likely be the last APCEDI Report on Cyclone Ami. =A0FSP Fiji is now working closely with DISMAC to co-ordinate the FPSI response to the Cyclone. =A0

Many villages on Vanua Levu have been targeted in recent years as part of the AusAID-funded and EMA-funded Cyclone Awareness Program of AFAP and FSP Fiji which came in response to Super Cyclone Gavin in 1997. =A0Over the next several months, we will be looking at how these villages fared in the current cyclone situation to see if the preparedness training was sufficient and useful in helping villagers better prepare.
